The T-Shirt of the Future from John Smedley

John Smedley and “Better Thinking” take sustainable luxury to a new level.

Spring 2008 will see the launch of a new ‘Luxury Redefined’ t-shirt, made from naturally irrigated, organic, fair trade, luxury Peruvian cotton and powered by renewable energy. The result – the world’s most environmentally responsible, ethical and socially positive t-shirt. Founded in 1784 in Derbyshire, England, John Smedley is considered the authority on luxury knitwear. This iconic British brand, combining a heritage of over 200 years of expert craftsmanship with a socially-responsible policy of openness in its manufacture, now looks set to become true fair-trade pioneers.

Dawne Stubbs, John Smedley’s Brand Manager adds “Sustainability is actually part of how John Smedley thinks and works in general. We have always tried to minimise our impact on the environment in everything we do. All of our garments are designed to be loved and treasured far beyond next season”.

The project was launched in October 2005 in a bid for the creation of the worlds most ‘perfect t-shirt’. Following two years of extensive global research and development, the ‘perfect t-shirt’ has finally come to fruition. Using over 35 hand-finish operations, the result is a perfectly-cut crew long sleeve crew neck containing around 1,206,000 knitted stitches with linked seams which eliminates unsightly ribbed seams. The involved process makes for a material that’s so soft that it doesn’t even feel like cotton but more like a cashmere blend. They’re available in different cuts for men, women and children, but only come in a natural cream color (they don’t use any dyes).

The term ‘Luxury Redefined’ signifies the changing tide within the textiles industry, wherein the inherent luxury of a product is not purely the branding, but also in the origins and production of the product. John Smedley identified wholly with this important global trend, and through the ‘Better Thinking” partnership, provides a vehicle for a new wave of ethical dressing.

The John Smedley ‘perfect t-shirt’, is for people who understand the true meaning of luxury in the 21st Century and anyone who wants to enjoy quality garments whilst being environmentally friendly.

The Sunday Times “Style in the City”

City style event comes to Birmingham! 3rd – 6th April

This April, Birmingham is playing host to this years inaugural “Style in the City” event; a sophisticated new event aimed at fashion savvy woman combining fashion, glamour, entertainment to create a veritable retail heaven. It is a rare opportunity for us fashion-obsessed femmes to see high fashion in the flesh! British fashion icons Stella McCartney and Matthew Williamson have both confirmed their participation. Stella will be showing her latest designs outside of London for the first time, including her recent collaboration on golf and yoga-wear with sportswear giants Adidas and Matthew Williamson will be treating our peepers to a very exclusive sneak-peak at his new Autumn Winter 2008 collection. Complementing the catwalk designs being showcased by the cream of the British crop, ‘British Fashion Designer of the Year’ Christopher Kane has also designed a shopping bag exclusively for the new event. Like Anya Hindmarch’s blow-out “I’m not a plastic bag” handbag last year, The Sunday Times “Style in the City” bag is already tipped to become one of Spring 2008s most sought-after fashion accessories.

As well as the high fashion tit-bits and sneak previews, TV stylist moguls Trinny & Susannah will officially launch their new “Style Academy”. This will incorporate aspects of their popular television programmes into a live theatre show. Contestants will receive personal tips on how to choose the right clothes to flatter certain body shapes. This is also supported by a number of interactive features, which enables the contestants to put what they learn into practise- a type of ‘fashion surgery’, with each participant leaving with a diploma upon completion of the academy. This is a great idea for women wanting to re-invent themselves and Birmingham’s “Style in the City” is the ideal location; professional fashion stylists, designers and body shape experts are all at hand to help you make the best decisions for your new wardrobe!

The concept for the event itself will be very unique in that it will not be located in any one venue. An eclectic array of vehicles including hot-pink buses and cyde rickshaws will escort visitors to exclusive events at participating retailers and special destinations around the city centre. These will include Centenary Square, which will be hosting the catwalk shows, House of Fraser, Bullring, Selfridges, The Mail Box, Harvey Nichols and the Pavillions. Once ticket holders arrive at these various shopping hot-spots, they will be ushered into private areas where they will have exclusive access to private fashion shows, make-overs and masterclasses from well-known stylists, spa treatments, live music and dance events.

As well as the exclusive showcases from Williamson and McCartney, high fashion brands such as Alexander McQueen, Pucci, Burberry Prorsum, Mulberyy, Alice Temperley, Roberto Cavalli, Christian Louboutin, Chloe, DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Hilfiger and Armani Exchange will be used in the various catwalk shows. This is a fabulous opportunity to see new collections in action and take inspiration as well as observe the way in which professional stylists piece an outfit together.

Tickets will cost £20 for one day or £30 for a two-day pass. A Platinum Pass – which includes exclusive treats, lunch and a glass of champagne – is only £65. Entry to the opening night gala party will be £45.

Tickets can be bought from the website or by calling the hotline on 0871 231 0838.

OFFICE Spring/ Summer Collection 08

Year of the Supershoe!

Being the undisputed forerunner of high street footwear trends, Office have yet again come up trumps with their new spring/ summer collection. Forget the “It” bags of 2007; 2008 is set to be the year of the statement shoe. And Office has them all!

The ethnic trend is still going strong this season, continuing forth from the fringe and tassle craze showcased by Prada last summer. Woven, basket inspired sandals in earthy shades with hints of rich gold also feature heavily, combining zips, studs, discs, beads, jewels and multiple straps reminiscent of the muchly coveted gladiator sandals from Balenciaga SS 07.

The gorgeous range of rainbow flats with sweetie-inspired details such as Smartie and love heart style T-bars and candy bracelet ankle straps are adorable. These painterly-bright flats are the perfect accessory to simple summer ensembles and are a must have for any summertime Lolita!

But summer need not revolve around flat sandals and Office, never to shy away from a high heel or two, have a fabulous range of evening shoes with sky high heels ranging from daring translucent studded PVC to suede and metallic leather classic with glam rock-esque flame stripes, vampy pointy patent shoes-boots and giant Giambattista Valli-inspired strappy super-platforms.

The 70s has resurrected itself in recent seasons and it seems that the wooden block platform heel, borne of the late 60s and a product of the ‘most exciting year in shoe design’, is here to stay. Designers like Guiseppe Zanotti have pioneered the giant platform movement and Office has an awesomely authentic range combining cork, wood, suede and leather. These chunky heels are perfect for soggy festival weather if you can’t bear to go heel-free!

Whether you are a flats or towering heels girl, Office has everything you need to complete your collection of statement shoes this season. Don’t miss out!
