Graduate Fashion Week 2008

It is well known that Graduate Fashion Week is fast becoming the world’s greatest showcase of young, up and coming fashion and design talent in the UK. It is already one of the most important dates in the diaries of those in the know and is without doubt, the best place in the world to spot undiscovered new talent. It is essentially the fashion industry’s looking glass into the future of fashion and all it’s related disciplines. This year it will celebrate the work of more than 1000 of the finest BA Degree fashion students from 49 universities across the UK, for the biggest showcase of young talent in the world. It includes a static exhibition and two theatres hosting 23 shows over the four days. The event culminates in the glamorous Gala Fashion Shows and Awards on Wednesday June 11th. And with a recent move to Earls Court 2 London, home to such well known events as the BRIT Awards, Vodafone Live Music Awards, as well as a host of concerts for stars such as the Kaiser Chiefs, Madonna and Justin Timberlake, it is set to be the biggest and best show to date.

As always, Graduate Fashion Week attracts fashion scouts from the UK and overseas, all looking for that unique, quirky ‘Britishness’ that has helped to make some of the worlds most famous design houses the success they are today. It is also the ONLY major international fashion event open to the general public and is a one-off chance for us to sit alongside international fashion editors, recruiters and talent scouts from all over the world, watching professional catwalk shows from the future of British fashion. An absolutely inmissable opportunity for those who want to get their fingers in the future-fashion pie before everyone else cottons on!

For the fourth year running, GFW is sponsored by leading high street fashion brand River Island and the prestigious River Island Gold Award, presented for the most outstanding collection in the Gala Show, carries an incredible £20,000 prize for the winning student. This is the only award of its kind within UK Fashion Education. This collaboration has often resulted in young designers, often still at university, working alongside the in-house design team at River Island to customise and develop ideas for the brand’s forthcoming collections.

In 2008, the new Graduate Fashion Week Education day enjoys its first year, aimed at 14-18 year old school children and students at FE Colleges. The day will provide a unique insight into the various courses available at some of the very best universities in the UK as well as providing an opportunity to see one of the four Gala shows. Over the years Graduate Fashion Week has launched the careers of such brilliant British designers as Stella McCartney, Julien Macdonald, Antonio Beradi, Hussein Chalayan and Owen Gaster. Clearly this is the perfect chance to get an insiders perspective on how your career can progress through the fashion industry via fashion based degrees. The education day is basically one giant university open day, amalgamating all of the biggest and best Fashion BA courses from around the UK. It is an ideal opportunity to talk to universities of your choice wihtout having to trek accross the country.

Graduate Fashion Week has previously seen graduate designers snapped up by many of the world’s most prestigious brands including Donna Karan, Gucci, Levi Strauss, Calvin Klein and Reebok. Previous winners include Christopher Bailey (Winner of the first GFW Collection of the Year Award), Rachel Gurney knitwear designer for Donna Karan and Vikki Wittering who became accessory designer at Calvin Klein. Hopefully this year, Birmingham City University’s new Fashion talent will put Brum on the map!

Birmingham City University will be exhibiting on TUESDAY June 10th @ 6.30pm.

The T-Shirt of the Future from John Smedley

John Smedley and “Better Thinking” take sustainable luxury to a new level.

Spring 2008 will see the launch of a new ‘Luxury Redefined’ t-shirt, made from naturally irrigated, organic, fair trade, luxury Peruvian cotton and powered by renewable energy. The result – the world’s most environmentally responsible, ethical and socially positive t-shirt. Founded in 1784 in Derbyshire, England, John Smedley is considered the authority on luxury knitwear. This iconic British brand, combining a heritage of over 200 years of expert craftsmanship with a socially-responsible policy of openness in its manufacture, now looks set to become true fair-trade pioneers.

Dawne Stubbs, John Smedley’s Brand Manager adds “Sustainability is actually part of how John Smedley thinks and works in general. We have always tried to minimise our impact on the environment in everything we do. All of our garments are designed to be loved and treasured far beyond next season”.

The project was launched in October 2005 in a bid for the creation of the worlds most ‘perfect t-shirt’. Following two years of extensive global research and development, the ‘perfect t-shirt’ has finally come to fruition. Using over 35 hand-finish operations, the result is a perfectly-cut crew long sleeve crew neck containing around 1,206,000 knitted stitches with linked seams which eliminates unsightly ribbed seams. The involved process makes for a material that’s so soft that it doesn’t even feel like cotton but more like a cashmere blend. They’re available in different cuts for men, women and children, but only come in a natural cream color (they don’t use any dyes).

The term ‘Luxury Redefined’ signifies the changing tide within the textiles industry, wherein the inherent luxury of a product is not purely the branding, but also in the origins and production of the product. John Smedley identified wholly with this important global trend, and through the ‘Better Thinking” partnership, provides a vehicle for a new wave of ethical dressing.

The John Smedley ‘perfect t-shirt’, is for people who understand the true meaning of luxury in the 21st Century and anyone who wants to enjoy quality garments whilst being environmentally friendly.
